Seek: Introduce the problem, suitably dramatically. Use the student task described on the home page. Have the video above open in another tab.
Try: What kinds of systems should we include in this spaceship? Have students draw or write and then discuss what might be needed to keep them and the crew alive for 20 years. Clarify the terms input and output.
Show a portion of the Ted Talk on biosphere 2 (up until they enter; PG language after). Clarify what a biosphere is. Discuss.
Expand: Students make a T-chart to understand what they can and can’t have (no Internet, etc.)
Make connections: Students brainstorm what they would like to have.
